HHA High’s Grade 9 program provides students with a strong academic foundation across core Ontario curriculum areas, while also nurturing Jewish identity, creativity, confidence, and school spirit.

Academics

Judaic Studies

Our Judaic Studies curriculum develops knowledgeable, confident, and grounded Jewish young adults. Meeting students at their individual starting points, we build the knowledge, skills, and experiences that strengthen their Jewish identity, support their growth as independent learners, and translate Torah into meaningful action.

To bring this vision to life, our Judaic Studies program is built around four interconnected pillars:

I. Faith & Resilience

Through the study of foundational texts of Jewish thought and character development, including Shaar HaBitachon, Chassidut, Pirkei Avot, and others, students explore faith, purpose, self-worth, and resilience while cultivating a meaningful relationship with Hashem. Through knowledge, reflection, meaningful experiences, and positive role models, students are given the opportunity to develop spiritually from their own starting point. This approach is also reflected in the way Tefilah (prayer) is taught and modelled. Students learn to draw upon Torah as a source of inner strength, developing the perspective and confidence to navigate life’s challenges with optimism and purpose.

II. Jewish Identity & Moral Clarity

Through Tanach, Jewish history, Israel studies, and Proudly Jewish (see below), students develop a strong understanding of who they are and their place within the larger Jewish story. Students explore Jewish values, peoplehood, Israel, antisemitism, and contemporary challenges, strengthening their connection to the Jewish people and developing the knowledge and confidence to articulate their Jewish identity with dignity, clarity, and pride.

III. Proficiency & Independent Learning

Through the study of classical Jewish texts, students develop the knowledge, insight, textual skills, and learning habits needed to become confident and increasingly independent Jewish learners. Students are encouraged to understand, question, analyze, and reflect upon what they learn and consider its meaning and application in their own lives. Instruction is differentiated according to each student’s starting point while building a strong foundation for lifelong learning. The Boys Division places particular emphasis on Talmud, while the Girls Division places particular emphasis on Chumash, with both tracks focused on developing textual fluency, analytical thinking, and the ability to engage meaningfully with Torah sources.

IV. Leadership & Meaningful Impact

Jewish knowledge is intended to inspire action and change. HHA High equips students with the foundations, skills, and sense of responsibility to lead, contribute, and use their abilities in service of something larger than themselves. Through targeted hands-on programs, experiential learning, and signature initiatives such as Proudly Jewish and IMPACT (see below), students learn that Torah is a framework for how they live, lead, serve, and take responsibility for the world around them.

Proudly Jewish

The Proudly Jewish Leadership Pathway is a three-stage program designed to develop knowledgeable, articulate, and confident Jewish leaders. Students progress from understanding who they are, to learning how to express their identity and values, and ultimately to applying those skills through the Ambassador Programme, where they take on an authentic leadership role representing and educating others.

1. KNOWLEDGE

Students begin by building a strong foundation in Jewish identity, Jewish pride and belonging. The curriculum then shifts to understanding Jewish values, Jewish history, antisemitism, Israel, and contemporary Jewish life. Through inquiry, source analysis, media literacy, and critical thinking, they learn to evaluate competing narratives, recognize misinformation and propaganda, and respond thoughtfully to antisemitism and anti-Israel bias. 2. FINDING YOUR VOICE

Building on that knowledge, students develop the confidence and skills to communicate effectively. Through dramatic arts, public speaking, and coached presentations, they strengthen presence, audience awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication, and the ability to think and respond under pressure.

Finding Your Voice is led by Kaime Sherman, the Founder and Artistic Director of AiDa, Academy of Imagination & Dramatic Arts, with decades of experience in dramatic arts education, arts leadership, and corporate training.

3. AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME

The pathway culminates in authentic leadership experiences. In partnership with the Hamilton Police Service, student teams develop and deliver educational modules to serving police officers. Students draw upon both their knowledge and communication skills to educate others and represent the Jewish community with confidence, dignity, and pride.
